How to Modernize Your Home in 2017

If you have ever wanted to make your home more modern, 2017 is the year to do it! Every year newer and cooler technological and engineering advancements bring homeowners some awesome new products. But the question that we have today is, which ones will make your home more modern in 2017? To answer that question we have listed some of our favorite home gadgets, innovations, and tools so you can stay on top of the trends this year.

Smart Home Tech

Smart home technology is not new, but it is more popular than ever. You can have a smart device in every room if you wanted to, connecting your whole life and making things easier for you. The main goal of a smart device is to make life easier by automating or connecting your world in the most convenient way possible. There are many different kinds of smart devices out there with many different functions; but which ones are the best?

One of the handiest things you can do with smart home tech is to invest in smart lights. Smart lights give you the ability to control your lights from your phone. That way you can turn off the lights without having to use one of those clap-activated machines. With some products, you can also program the lights with your phone making it easy to deter would-be burglars when you happen to leave town.

Another really handy thing you can do with a smart device is to control the climate controls (that being the air conditioner and heater). So, whether you are at work, about to head home and want to make sure the heater is on or you can't get up to make some changes to your interior climate, this is a product for you. Smart thermostats are a great way to automate your home, and the most popular model is the "Nest" which is made by Google, so you know it is a good quality item. Not to mention you can easily set your preferences on the app instead of fumbling with the wall mounted controls.

The next candidate that you'll find in a smart home is a security system. Smart security systems can range from extremely inexpensive to top of the line prices. Some of the features you can find in some smart home security systems are live-streamed footage from your home to your phone, remote controlled locks, and so on and so forth. Not only does it give you peace of mind, but it also gives the ability to lock and unlock your home remotely. So, if you are away and a friend or relative stops by you can let them in, or if you are on vacation you can always know that your door is locked - no more second-guessing or worrying about whether you locked it before you left.

Then there is the smart fridge. While there are many smart devices in the kitchen, the smart fridge is the one that most people haven't heard of. To really understand it though it is best to use an example. Take this scenario, you are at the store and you can't remember if you have enough eggs to make breakfast in the morning. You don't want to buy eggs if you already have them, but you won't be able to come back later. Well, if you have a smart fridge, this isn't a problem. With a smart fridge, you can have it text you a picture of the current contents of your fridge. That way you can see what all's in there.

Lastly, there are smart home hubs. These are centralized machines that help you to connect all of your smart devices. While you can control them all from your phone, the smart hub, like the Amazon Echo or the Google Home, are voice activated. So you can control your music, your lights, your shopping lists, and so much more with your voice! There is no way to make you home seem more modern than getting a voice-controlled machine.

USB Wall Sockets

These are a super handy product that helps you have more freedom with your mobile devices. Let's say you are watching your favorite TV show on your tablet when the battery warning light comes on. Now you have to pause your show, get up, find a cord and then come sit back down. Now, that's all fine and good - until you realize that you need to get a USB to wall outlet adapter. This can be pretty annoying but it is something you can get around if you have USB wall sockets. They come in two kinds: covers and whole units. The covers are simply outlet splitters that plug into your existing outlet that gives you the two original outlets and a couple of USB sockets. Then, of course, there are full units where you buy a whole new wall socket where the USB ports are built into the whole unit.

LED Lights

Over the last few years, LEDs have become more and more popular for home lighting due to their efficiency, their brightness, and their longevity. Not to mention they are compact and inexpensive. The versatility of a LED light is another factor that attracts a lot of people to them. It doesn't matter where you want to use them, there will be a way to easily make it happen. Here are a few ideas of how you can use LEDs to modernize the image of your home.

Under Cabinet Lights

Usually, if a homeowner wanted to put lights under their cabinets, they would have to pay a lot of money for the materials and the labor involved to install it. With a LED strip of lights, you can not only do the installation yourself, but you can do it in a matter of minutes for much less. You see, you can get custom length LED light strips for very competitive prices online and at some department stores. These light strips will have an adhesive backing that will allow you to stick them wherever you like which, thanks to their slim profile, can really be anywhere. When you buy these packs, they will also come with a wall plug or an adaptor that you can put into a wall plug, which makes for a quick and easy installation.

LED Track Lighting

Track lights are a great way to light up a room. Not only are they flexible so they fit the room, but they are also classy and very chic. However, track lighting can be a quite expensive making the price of light very high. Not to mention track lights usually come with large, inefficient bulbs that will waste energy and your money. LED track lighting, on the other hand, is a method of lighting that will really appeal to both you and your wallet. Not only will it cost less up front, but they will cost less over time thanks to the efficient use of energy (estimates, not guarantees).

LED Floors

This project is a bit more intense than our previous ones and requires a lot more time to do. However, if you ever wanted your home to look like an event center, dance floor, or showroom, you really need to check out these light-up floors people are designing LEDs. They are put in fairly simple all you do is lay down the tracks that the LEDs will sit in on the bare floor before you put down the tile or laminate. Next, you lay the flooring down so that the lights will sit flush with the floor. You can then install the lights and the covers for the lights. And there you go, a light up LED floor!
